Rejection of the XI Oil Round in Quito
“Life is being negotiated”
This was expressed by Tupak Viteri, Tayak Apu of the Original Kichwa People of Sarayaku, before the delegates of the grassroots organizations that were present in a symbolic sit-in in rejection of the XI round of oil bidding, announced by the Ecuadorian government for this Wednesday 28 November at the Quito Marriot Hotel.
Delegates of the peoples and nationalities of the Amazon and the Ecuadorian Sierra gathered in front of the venue for the meeting organized by the Hydrocarbons Secretariat with the oil companies, to denounce and reject the XI Oil Bidding Round, which will affect 3 million 700 thousand hectares of virgin Amazon.
Humberto Cholango, President of CONAIE, denounced that the prior consultation carried out by the Ministry of Non-Renewable Resources is absolutely false, therefore the oil tender is unconstitutional and violates the sovereignty of the Ecuadorian people. "40 years of oil exploitation have left nothing but poverty, environmental devastation, disease and genocide" Cholango affirmed and ratified "the indigenous movement is going to defend the territories of the nationalities".
At 11:15 a.m., Franco Viteri, president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (CONFENIAE), together with representatives of the Shuar, Achuar, Shiwiar, Sápara and Kichwa nationalities, will give a press conference in the Marriot Hotel Lobby.
